In short: Speech, text, and images are processed locally on your iPhone for translation, not sent to a translation server. Translation works offline after downloading the required packs. Downloads, App Store purchases, website visits, and support messages you send are separate from this offline processing.

2. Types of data processed
Tolki only accesses the following data categories with your explicit consent:
- Microphone: For recording speech input during active interpreter sessions. Recording is performed exclusively on-device and is not stored.
- Speech recognition: Using Apple's on-device speech recognition.
- Camera and selected images: For local text recognition and translation.
- Settings: Language preferences, selected voices, learning progress, and setup progress are stored locally in the App Group container.
3. Data processing: Entirely local
3.1 Speech recognition
Tolki uses Apple's local speech recognition features. Processing occurs on-device; speech input is not sent to a translation server.
3.2 Translation
Tolki uses the Apple Translation Framework and additional local OPUS-MT models for certain languages. Required packs are downloaded in advance; translation itself then runs on the device.
3.3 Text-to-speech (TTS)
Tolki uses Piper TTS (open source, VITS architecture via sherpa-onnx) and AVSpeechSynthesizer for speech output. Both systems run entirely on-device without any network communication.
4. Data storage
Settings, saved favorite phrase pairs, learning progress, and setup progress are stored locally in the protected app or App Group container. Favorites may therefore contain translation content that you choose to save.
5. Network communication
Translation does not require a server connection after setup. Translation, speech recognition, and voice packs, as well as app updates, require downloads. Additional translation and voice models are downloaded from sources including tolki.coolblack.gmbh. The server receives technically necessary connection data, such as the IP address and requested file path, but not the conversation content to be translated.
Purchases and restoring purchases are handled by Apple's App Store. Chat Mode connects two iPhones locally and sends content to the connected conversation partner, not a Tolki translation server. If you share content or send a support email, you choose which information to send to the recipient.
Website and support
Visiting this website generates technically necessary connection data at the web server. The Tolki pages do not include our own analytics or advertising trackers. Images and website files load from our own server; text uses existing system fonts. For further information about the website and contacting us, see the Coolblack GmbH privacy notice (German).
Optional YouTube video and external platforms
The demonstration video is disabled initially. Only clicking “Load YouTube video” loads the player from youtube-nocookie.com in privacy-enhanced mode. YouTube/Google then receives technically necessary connection data, including your IP address and the referring site. Google may process additional data when you use the player. Privacy-enhanced mode does not mean no data is transferred after activation. See Google’s privacy policy for further information.
“Close video” removes the player again; it does not undo data already transferred. This website does not save your activation choice, so you need to enable the video again after reloading. Links to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok only open the external platform when clicked. The respective provider’s privacy policy applies there.
6. Your rights
Tolki’s saved app data is stored locally on your device. Uninstalling removes local app data; this does not delete separately shared content, support emails or data held by external providers.
